The Roade Story

From overgrow field to croquet club
A vision to build a four lawn club has been achieved through hard work and dedication by a few committed members.

August 2024
The rubberised roofing material is now on with the final trim fixing to complete. The exterior just requires the topcoat on the front face to complete the paintwork, although it will need to be done again in a several years’ time. Work on the inside is also progressing well with kitchen units fitted and carpet tiles purchased and ready to install.

The clubhouse was built by a small team of hardworking members. The photographs below show how much work went into preparing the ground, installing the supporting foundations and building the clubhouse.

Roade progress timeline

January 2024
We are looking forward to the new season, starting April 1st. Lawn 4 has been levelled, so we will have have three lawns to play on.

September and October 2023
Lawn 4 was prepared and seeded. This work was undertaken by the club, with no outside contractors employed. We were able to obtain some top soil from the bowls club, which helped. This has become a very good playing lawn and helped with keeping the wear on lawns 1 and 2 manageable.

April 2023
We have now moved to our permanent home in Roade.

February 2023
We are moving to Roade on 1 April, playing on two lawns. Our two main, professionally levelled and seeded lawns should be ready to play on by early June.

January 2023
Now we are in 2023 work has continued at Roade, with extensive clearing and preparing lawns three and four. Water is now on the site allowing us to irrigate the lawns in hot weather. A sign has now been installed at the entrance. See new photographs at the bottom of the page.
A secure storage container has been sited and lawn care equipment has been purchased including a reconditioned cylinder mower and a paddock mower.
Below are some photographs showing the progress we have made. We hope to be playing at Roade by late spring or early summer.
