History of the club

Northampton Croquet Club was founded in 1986 and played in Becket’s Park Northampton. Conditions were primitive with two overlapping lawns, neither full size. We paid by the hour, car parking was costly and play depended on finding the groundsman, invariably at lunch.

We moved to our present location, in front of St. Andrew’s Hospital in 1992, where we had two lawns, a small wooden club house and later an equipment shed. Two lawns were added after a few years, allowing us to play throughout the year.

There was croquet played at St Andrew’s in Victorian times

In December 2019 we were given notice to leave St Andrew’s and we are currently playing at Old Grammarians, Wellingborough. We hope to move to new lawns in Sywell in 2021.
See the News page for regular updates.

In August 2020 the club members chose a site in Sywell to be our new permanent home.
Work is ongoing to prepare the site for play in 2021.

The Charity Commission approved our application for charitable status in October 2020.
